• What statement about humanity does Polanski attempt to make with the ending of his film, Chinatown, and was he successful?
In Polanski's film Chinatown, he shows a very gruesome scene in which one of the main characters gets shot through the head, and her child is taken back by the man who raped her mother as a child. I feel that Polanski was trying to show that in some cases, it is impossible to escape reality, no matter how terrible it is. The way that Gittes is shut down when he tries to show the policemen the terrible truth about Cross reinforces that the world is a terrible place and life really is not fair.
