Part 1

If I wrote Smoke Signals, after the automobile accident, Victor and Thomas would be injured and put in the hospital. This accident would give Victor some perspective. He would realize that the petty grudge he'd been holding against Thomas was a waste of time and that they needed to be friends. He would apologize to Thomas, and accept him even with his odd personality. Suzie Song would move to the reservation where Thomas and Victor lived, and moved in with Thomas and his grandma. She and Thomas would become best friends, and her and Victor would fall in love. They would get married, and live happily on the reservation for the rest of their lives.

Part 2

The film Smoke Signals was based on a series of short stories written by Sherman Alexie. Some elements from his story "Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock" are evident, though different, in the plot. For example, in the story, Victor is the one recounting the tale, while in the movie, Thomas tells the story in order to get a ride to the bus station. The most prominent similarity between the two is the drunken nature of Victor's father. In the story, Victor talks about how after coming home at night, his father would be drunk and listen to Jimi Hendrix all night long. In the movie, we see a scene where Victor and his father are in the car, and Victor is holding onto his father's beer. Victor accidentally drops the beer, and his father hits him, and it can be assumed that he is drunk.
I feel that the story was smoothly adapted into the film, adding and taking away details in order to make the movie worth watching. I noticed bits and pieces from Alexie's original piece, but I enjoyed the other additions as well.
